by “ prim itive, outsider and
children’s art,” as w ell as by
“ visual fragm ents from my
H ungarian traditions.” Jan
H opkins finds that “ sew ing
and its repetitive m otion”
connects her to the “ narrative
soul” o f each piece and that
using “ materials from nature”
beckons her back home.
T hese m akers, so diverse
in approach, are am ongthe io
invited by the veteran fiber
artist and educator A nn Bad-
deley K eister to show their
w orks alongside her ow n in
an exhibition at the M uskegon
P P M u se u m o f A rt meant to
highlight “ the best contem po-
rary artw orks that em ploy
the ancient crafts o f sew ing,
piecing and em bellishm ent.”
K eister, w hose w ork has
evolved technically from tap-
estry w eavin g to the em bel-
lishment o f pieced and quilted
fabrics, points out that the
selected artists show rever-
ence for traditional textile
objects, but are hardly mired
in the past. T h e w orks in
the exhibition, she w rites,
“exem plify the transcendence
that can occur w hen artists
o f vision em ploy a particular
combination o f traditional
te xtile techniques, som e-
tim es coupled w ith .
..con tem -
porary ideas.” But technique,
w hether tim e-honored
or new -fangled, is never the
w hole point when considering
these com pelling objects. It
is individual vo ices, K eister
says, “ that instill the objects
w ith m a g ic ,.
.. provide their
content and con text” and
invite us to contem plate “ the
resonance o f m eaning and
visual poetry evoked by these
pieces.”— n.s.
